The economics of phone sex – how the business works

There is a myth that phone sex is easy money and that anyone can get rich doing it.

I’m writing this post to dispel rumors and give new phone sex operators (PSOs) a clearer picture of the industry and also to educate callers on their options.  To share what happens to each dollar spent on phone sex.  I genuinely love the phone sex industry and everything I share here is intended to deepen your enjoyment of my favorite pastime whether you are a caller or a PSO.

Phone sex is a fun business!  But it IS a business.  With expenses and financial concerns like any other business.

getyourkinkonI have wanted to write this blog for a long time, but I was spurred to do it now because a recent caller told me he imagined I make six figures and that I earn far more per hour than he does.  Ha!  lol  I am still laughing at that.

This industry can reward a woman well if she has certain gifts and abilities, but it is not likely to make a PSO rich.  Here are some of the details…

There are three main business models in this industry.  Many PSO’s work one model or another, some work combinations of these options.  All of these options have their benefits.

Dispatch phone sex agencies

Agencies advertise and develop loyal callers based on fetish niches or price points.  The better ones heavily screen applicants and offer their PSOs training and other support.  They have centralized billing and offer callers a more consistent experience when calling a range of PSOs.  They offer PSOs a more reliable stream of calls and income.  Dispatch agencies typically pay the PSO about 25% to 35% of what a customer pays per minute, sometimes more.

Bad dispatch companies provide little support for their PSOs, offer inconsistent experiences for their callers, and pay their operators as little as 10% of what the caller is spending on his call.  Do your research when choosing a dispatch company!  The good ones are great and the bad ones are hideous.

To keep caller experiences consistent and to protect themselves from PSOs with bad judgement, dispatch agencies usually have lots of rules.  Not always, but usually.

Phone sex platforms

phonesexfunPlatforms like NiteFlirt and AdultPhonePal allow more independent-minded women to set up shop and work their own hours and set their own rates.  There is no screening process and no training provided, so callers can expect inconsistent experiences when calling different PSOs.  But there is a centralized phone system and billing set-up, so women do not have to obtain toll free numbers or process payments at all and guys can set up billing once and then use their funds for multiple calls with multiple providers.  PSOs can expect some organic traffic on most platforms but should also plan to blog or advertise or use social media to build an audience as well.  Rates on platforms vary wildly as women set their own prices.  The platform usually keeps 35% to 40% of that and the PSO gets 60% to 65%.

Phone sex platforms tend to have fewer rules than dispatch agencies, but they still have a list of forbidden topics.

Direct dial independent phone sex operators

Direct dial PSO’s are fully independent phone sex professionals.  They create their own businesses from scratch, obtaining their own phone lines, payment processors, marketing channels, etc. etc.  They can charge what they like and depending on their processing costs and marketing costs and other overhead, they likely keep 70% to 80% of what the caller spends on a call.  The advantage for PSOs of going this route is total autonomy and fewer rules and a closer relationship with your callers.  The advantage for callers would be no annoying interruptions while the platform reauthorizes your card, no restrictions other than respecting the limits set by your PSO, and knowing that you are supporting a true entrepreneur.  Plus, there is always a slight risk with platforms and dispatch companies that something will happen and your operator may leave that setting.  There are generally contracts that would prevent her from contacting you (even to say goodbye!) if she leaves.  With direct dial calling, the relationship is more personal and there is no company between you.

The business in general

spoilyourgoddessA good phone sex operator can hope to be on the phone about 30% to 40% of the time she is logged in for calls.  A great operator can hope 50% to 60% of her logged in time spent on calls.  So whatever she earns per hour while on a call needs to be stretched out to cover the hours when she is waiting for a call.  And those hours are not spent eating bon bons and watching tv!  Today, virtually all PSOs must spend time blogging, tweeting, texting, creating advertising, keeping up her bookkeeping, studying her fetish niches, and emailing (and emailing and emailing).  This career path is a ton of work!!  Long hours spent with callers that are often narcissistic and sometimes really emotionally damaged.  Some callers are abusive.  Many confuse fantasy and reality.  And most have little regard for what their PSO is experiencing.  Then there are the wankers that want your time but will not call!  Ack!

To be a PSO today, you must be tough, smart, efficient and filthy!  Plus, everyone and their sister is trying phone sex because of this rotten economy, so you need to bring something special to the table.  All that being said, if you have what it takes, being a phone sex operator is a total fucking blast!  :)  lol  I love my “work”.

In conclusion

There is a cost of doing business for any industry and I never resent the percentage of my income that goes to a platform or processor.  Callers and PSOs alike should accept that these necessary costs provide many invaluable benefits like essential anonymity and easy ways for us to find each other and simple credit card processing.  I shared the above information to help you make educated choices about where to work and how to spend your phone bone dollars on fun filthy entertainment with fabulous talented women.  If you have any questions or concerns, please share them in the comments area below and I will reply promptly.

  1. Mistress,

    You are extraordinary, truly.

Thank you so much for sharing this. I really had no idea, though I knew that the services took a cut…but really, I had no idea it could be that much.

Also, I want you to know how much I appreciate all your time, on email, texts, etc. I can only but imagine how swamped you must be, and how needy some of us can become, under your expert hand. But you are a marvel, and are always so great about responding. Thank you so much.

And, I hope some of your other callers see and read this posting so they can have a better understanding. Your post is, I know, oriented to other PSO’s, to help them. But it also is enlightening to your callers….and adding a gift to you as thank you is so important and well deserved….AND it feels good giving it.

    • Hi subby,

I think transparency is good for all and educated consumers make better choices. :) This post is for PSOs and for callers, too. Thank you for sharing your reactions here. And you are welcome for the time and attention. I genuinely enjoy you. You are a good egg. :)

  2. As someone who hustles and works pretty much all three business models, and in my experience, when one isn’t busy, the other one is busy, and the more hats you wear the more money you can make doing so. But it’s no cake walk. You do have to tweet, blog, promote yourself, and not just sit around waiting for calls. Hard work does pay off though. Especially if you have regulars who adore you and appreciate what you do for them. :) And this is also a very good post for those customers who actually think pso’s just sit on their asses and don’t do any “work.” Talking to your customers is work; finding out what gets them off and catering to a specific (or non specific) fetish is work.

I personally would love nothing more than to frig myself silly while listening to show tunes all day and baking chocolate cupcakes and having some hot stud paint my toenails…. not that this doesn’t happen, but I am required – by myself – to hold myself to a higher standard of accountability if I want to consider myself well to do as a pso. And what is well to do for one, may not be necessarily well to do for another. But by my own standards I think I’m doing alright. Especially when some poor sap is on his knees sucking cock for me. *giggles*

  3. This article both shames me and makes me want to do a fist pump in the air! : D Good on you Mistress June for sharing.

The fist pump is because so often in calls and social media, this issue of the great fortune I “have to be raking in” comes up. And that simply isn’t so. Truthfully, I left a job I was making more money in AND had benefits in to be a phone sex girl. What phone sex gives me is a job I love, fun sex ideas, and the flexibility to work it around my class schedule every semester. A huge bank account sadly isn’t a perk.

This article shames me, in regards to all the things I am should be doing between calls:

“Today, virtually all PSOs must spend time blogging, tweeting, texting, creating advertising, keeping up her bookkeeping, studying her fetish niches, and emailing (and emailing and emailing).”

I confess to being a monstrously lazy girl, and simply don’t do any of the above near as much as should. ; D

    • Hi Tala!

Thanks for the support. :) I know some PSOs will be mad I shared, but I think transparency is a good thing! You did a great job of sharing your situation. Thank you for giving folks your perspective. It IS a fun job, isn’t it?? (It is especially fun when you have sweet well trained callers like mine. Thanks, guys!) And there are lots of good things about this field, but there are challenges, too.

Well, I selfishly want you to start doing more of that stuff only because I always enjoy hearing what you have to say. :)

  4. This article got so long, I could not include everything there is to say, but I do also want to mention to prospective PSOs, that there are a surprising number of overhead costs to this industry, too, so you want to be prepared for those. Things like…. good phones, a landline (or two), a million headsets because they all die too often, web hosting, domain names, new software, advertising, images for your blogs, a good mic if you want to make audios, a podcasting service if you are into that, soundproofing materials if you have neighbors nearby, the upgraded Skype, an accountant familiar with adult work, probably a better computer, etc. etc.

  5. Miss June, I hope this puts a practical/economic context for all PS clients. Most work hard, and client dont realize the other thing most PSO’s do for a great relationship/experience.

  6. dear Mistress June — i would like to thank You profusely for encouraging my Mommy Emma to become a PSO with a special interest in adult babies like myself. she is truly superb at it — a real class act. obviously, You appreciated her talent and pushed her in the right direction. thanks again! baby julie

  7. I love this posting, Ms June. When I first became a phone sex Mistress, about five years ago, I really was not sure what to expect. Thank goodness I had an in-depth background in marketing, because I use those skills every day. It is true that phone sex is not for those who want to make easy money. It requires talent, tenacity, marketing, and daily work in all of the areas you mentioned.

While it is great fun to talk about fetishes, and bring fantasies to life…it is work. I find it to be a wonderful way to exercise my endlessly creative mind. But sometimes I need to take a break, and get myself balanced again.

You and I have done so many amazing two Mistress calls together, and I know how much you LOVE your “work”. *smile*

I agree with you on the topic of transparency. This posting is going to be an eye opener for both women considering a PSO career, and the men who call PSO’s. Knowledge is power.

    Love you!

    Miss Emma Knight

    • Yay!!! :) I am so happy to see you here, Miss Knight! Thank you for sharing your thoughts. We MUST play together again soon! I adore you to pieces.

      Right back atcha, Sexy Mama!
